Practice
Richard's practice spans the fields of telecommunications, electronics, computer-implemented inventions, physics, and medical devices.
Within these fields, Richard has extensive experience in the drafting and prosecution of patent applications relating to mobile phone technology, analogue and digital electronic circuits, the structure and manufacture of electronic devices, fibre-optic systems, electrical and electromechanical devices, power generation, and surgical apparatus.
Richard represents a wide range of clients, including multi-national companies, SMEs, universities, university spin-outs, and overseas clients. In addition to drafting and prosecuting patent applications, and preparing and prosecuting oppositions and appeals before the European Patent Office (EPO), Richard regularly provides his clients with advice on IP strategy. Richard is a frequent visitor to the EPO, and has extensive experience in representing clients at oral proceedings, especially before the examining division.
Richard is a graduate of Oxford University, with a First degree in physics and a doctorate in applied superconductivity. Richard’s industry-sponsored research was based at Oxford University’s Clarendon Laboratory, where he also pursued post-doctoral research to develop high-temperature superconducting magnets for MAGLEV applications.
Richard qualified as a Chartered Patent Attorney and a European Patent Attorney in 2002, and joined HGF in 2007. Richard became a Partner in 2011.
