Practice

Jamie has over 20 years’ experience in the patent profession, specialising in the field of chemistry, particularly medical devices, pharmaceuticals and performance chemicals. As well as drafting and prosecuting patent applications, he handles contentious EPO opposition and appeal proceedings, provides strategic advice on IP portfolios, and opinions on the infringement and validity of patents.

Jamie has a broad range of expertise dealing with medical devices, pharmaceuticals, performance chemicals, catalysts, fibres and fabrics, and oil & gas technologies (particularly liquefaction processes).

As well as drafting and prosecuting patent applications before the EPO and UKIPO, Jamie has significant experience in EPO opposition and appeal proceedings, partly obtained during the two years he was based in Munich, home of the EPO’s Technical Boards of Appeal.

He has managed global patent portfolios both in private practice and while in-house on secondment to a major energy and petrochemical company in London, where he was responsible for one of their key performance chemicals and associated catalyst and process patents.

Jamie provides clients with strategic advice on their IP assets and handles freedom to operate and other opinion work, advising on infringement and validity, particularly in relation to new product launches.

He was named as a ‘Patent Star’ for 2016 and 2017 by Managing Intellectual Property and currently serves on the IP subcommittee of the Law Society of Scotland. Jamie holds a first class B. Sc. in Chemistry from the University of St. Andrews, where he remained to study the structure of specific inorganic oxides and polymer electrolytes by x-ray and neutron diffraction, for which he was awarded a Ph. D.

After leaving university, Jamie joined the patent profession in 1996. He trained and qualified as both a UK and European Patent Attorney whilst working for a top-tier private practice in the south east of England, where he represented a blue-chip chemical company in the fields of fibres and flexographic printing.

Jamie returned to Scotland where he practised for seven years before joining the Glasgow office of HGF in January 2015.  He established the Edinburgh office of HGF later that year and is part of the team there working on medical devices, particularly valves, stents and stent-grafts.
