Practice
Bal specialises in the pharmaceutical field and has considerable experience in securing patent rights, conducting IP due diligence evaluations and providing advice in relation to freedom to operate queries. Bal also has extensive experience of co-ordinating multi-jurisdictional patent litigation across Europe. Bal joined the Manchester HGF office in October 2015.
Bal has a strong technical background and has spent over 6 years working as a senior product development scientist within the pharmaceutical industry. Bal has also spent over 9 years working within the in-house patent department of a major global pharmaceutical company. After gaining a first class Bachelor of Pharmacy degree and a PhD in pulmonary delivery, both from King’s College London, Bal joined a drug delivery company to work on a range of specialised oral and transdermal formulation technologies.
During his patent career, he has been responsible for managing patent portfolios for a number of drug development projects and marketed products. Bal has also provided extensive support for business development activities and has worked on various due diligence evaluations, ranging from early stage collaborations to major global out-sourcing contracts and late-stage product and company acquisitions.
During the last 3 years, Bal has led a multi-disciplinary patent and regulatory litigation team to defend a major product in multiple jurisdictions across Europe, South America and Asia. Activities have included defending revocation and non-infringement actions, filing and securing injunctions, co-ordinating main infringement/damages actions and negotiating patent settlement agreements. Bal has developed a deep knowledge of the strategic and country-specific aspects of pharmaceutical patent litigation through working closely with a wide network of IP litigation counsel.
