Practice

Matt is a Chartered UK and European Patent Attorney who works to secure, defend and leverage IP rights for technology businesses in Europe and worldwide.  Matt understands how innovative businesses can use IP as an asset to facilitate their growth and has a passion for helping UK businesses utilise the IP system effectively to be competitive in increasingly globalised markets.

Matt's practical and collaborative approach begins with understanding the commercial context and objectives of his clients from which he develops a supporting IP strategy to help achieve those objectives.  To execute this strategy, Matt has considerable experience in patent and design drafting and prosecution, often handling technically and legally complex cases.  He has appeared regularly in proceedings before the UK Intellectual Property Office and in Opposition and Appeals hearings before the European Patent Office.

Matt has experience of advising on IP in commercial transactions and M&A, advising start-ups through early stage funding rounds and advising on contentious matters of infringement and validity in patent disputes. Matt has also advised on IP strategies for utilising the UK’s Patent Box scheme for corporation tax relief and is interested in seeking out ways companies can use their IP to generate new revenue streams.

Matt entered the IP profession having gained a First class degree in Astrophysics and a graduate degree in Optics and Photonics and after completing three years in commercial research and development.

At Zeeko Ltd, a precision engineering start-up based in the UK, Matt developed software to precisely control the operation of Zeeko’s innovative robotic polishing machines.  For Logica, a large software consultancy also in the UK, Matt developed signal processing and artificially intelligent classification algorithms for a remote sensing laser vibrometry system.

Matt was attracted to join HGF in 2014, having gained ten years’ experience at two other top tier firms of Patent Attorneys and having qualified as a Chartered Patent Attorney in 2008, winning the prestigious Gill Prize for the highest overall mark that year.

Matt has broad technical experience in the electronics, IT, telecoms, and mechanical and electrical engineering fields. This has involved him on patent projects in diverse sectors including 3G, LTE and cryptographic standards, user interfaces, database systems, computer security, cloud computing, search technologies, group video chat, steel bar manufacture, MEMS technologies, remote sensing oil and gas exploration, subsea and down hole data communications, oil and gas pipeline laying, financial services systems, medical devices, waste treatment, online gaming, elevator control systems, semiconductor processing, and the automotive and aerospace systems. Matt is a FICPI-UK Council Member and an IAM1000 Recommended Attorney.
