Before he entered the employment of Arnold + Siedsma, Marten worked for a number of start-up companies, including as business developer for a high-tech start-up. Here he saw first-hand how difficult it can be to market new technology as a small player. A crucial element in that respect was intellectual property protection.
Marten obtained his doctorate from Amsterdam University with a thesis on semiconductor sensors for high-sensitive radiation detectors. He conducted his thesis research at Nikhef and CERN, the national institute for subatomic physics and the European laboratory for particle physics. In close consultation with industry specialists, he researched the applicability of these detectors in medical x-ray imaging systems. Through this research, Marten became proficient in the area of semiconductor physics, specifically semiconductor sensors, and medical and non-medical imaging instrumentation.
